Shetland Leisure and Recreation
Summer
In the summer, Shetland is a perfect location for natural and outdoor pursuits with the long days providing opportunities for activity to continue around the clock. Summertime pursuits include ornithology, walking and angling both in the sea and in inland lochs.
Sport is also popular and universally common games such as golf, football (soccer) and hockey co-exist alongside events unique to Shetland, such as yoal racing. (A yoal is a Shetland rowing boat). Competitions with teams representing the neighbouring Orkney Islands are held annually, and Shetland also sends competitors to the Island Games competition.
Winter
In winter there are less opportunities outdoors, but a wealth of activities inside to keep people occupied. Sports continue indoors, utilising the many superb indoor leisure facilities around the isles. Music is more evident during the winter months, whether at organised concerts and dances, or just impromptu sessions or jams purely for pleasure. Community events are also more frequent, and festivals such as Up-Helly-Aa provide fun and enjoyment for locals and visitors alike.
